A ROUTED DAY · CAYUGA LAKE

A day in Ithaca.

Stewart Park to the Ithaca Farmers Market (or a gorge) to the Commons to Purity Ice Cream to a chef-driven dinner. The best day in the region for a rainy-weather Plan B or a market-Saturday pilgrimage.

Ithaca is thirty-five minutes from the dock — the day-trip city of the region. Cornell and Ithaca College anchor it; Cayuga Lake defines it; the downtown Commons is one of the best pedestrian retail districts in upstate New York. On weekends, the Ithaca Farmers Market at Steamboat Landing is the single event most worth the drive. On weekdays, the gorges (Buttermilk and Robert Treman) plus the Commons make a full day.

What follows is the routed day, timed to catch the market when it's open and the gorges when they're not crowded. The eating in Ithaca is genuinely deep — more serious dinners per capita than the rest of the region combined — so save appetite for the Commons.

9-10 AM · MORNING

The Cayuga waterfront wake-up.

Ithaca is a thirty-five-minute drive from Seneca. Start early, park at Stewart Park for the lake wake-up, then walk the Cayuga waterfront path before the day gets hot.

Stewart Park

Free · Carousel · Playground

Ithaca

Southern tip of Cayuga Lake. Carousel, sprawling playground, sunset picnic lawn, and one of the great Finger Lakes lake views. Free parking; free access. The right way to arrive in Ithaca.

10 AM-1 PM · MARQUEE

The Ithaca Farmers Market OR the state parks.

Split by day. Saturday or Sunday: it's the Ithaca Farmers Market at Steamboat Landing, hands-down. Any other day: pick a gorge — Buttermilk or Robert Treman are both twelve minutes from downtown.

Ithaca Farmers Market

Sat & Sun · Apr–Nov

Ithaca

One of the great farmers markets in the northeast. Steamboat Landing pavilion on the water. Come hungry — the prepared food is half the reason. Saturdays and Sundays only in season.

Ithaca

Ten waterfalls in a single gorge, natural swimming pool at the base. The easy Ithaca gorge — half the crowd of Watkins, kids handle it comfortably.

Robert H. Treman State Park

Diving board · Swim

Ithaca

Lucifer Falls and the two-mile gorge trail that ends at the dammed swim hole with the diving board. The kids' favorite in the region — bring towels.

1-2:30 PM · LUNCH

Lunch in town.

The Commons is the pedestrian-only downtown — dozens of options within three blocks. Kindred Fare is the Geneva pick worth the extra drive; for lunch in Ithaca proper, pick from the Commons.

The Ithaca Commons

Downtown pedestrian

Ithaca

Three blocks of pedestrian-only shopping and dining in downtown Ithaca. Independent restaurants, ice cream, coffee, and the boutique-retail scene that makes lunch a two-hour affair. Free public parking underground.

2:30-4:30 PM · AFTERNOON

The Ithaca Commons browse.

The Commons is not just lunch — it's the afternoon. Independent bookstores, boutiques, the year-round downtown of the city. Time it right and there's live music on the pedestrian plaza most weekends.

Ithaca

The full-afternoon browse. Buffalo Street Books, Autumn Leaves used books, Alphabet Soup for kids, and the mix of shops that survives because Ithaca supports them. Better than a mall.

Ithaca

The alternative if the Commons feels crowded. Cornell's 4,300-acre botanic gardens — free, dawn to dusk, year-round. Stroller-friendly paths, working gardens, contemplative pace.

5-6 PM · THE ICE-CREAM STOP

Purity or Cornell Dairy.

Ithaca's ice-cream game is deep. Purity has been Ithaca's institution since 1936; Cornell Dairy is made on the campus by the university's food-science program. Pick one; you'll come back for the other.

Ithaca

Since 1936 — 'The Ice Cream of the Finger Lakes.' Original-recipe small-batch flavors plus a full kitchen menu. The Ithaca childhood institution.

Cornell Dairy Bar

Cornell-made

Ithaca

Cornell's own creamery at Stocking Hall. Ice cream made on campus by the food-science program. Rotating weekly flavors. The academic version of the road-trip ice-cream stop.

6-8 PM · DINNER

The dinner call.

Ithaca has more serious dinner options per capita than the rest of the region combined. Two picks — a Commons walk-in or the Geneva-adjacent chef-driven table forty minutes north.

The Ithaca Commons

Walk-in density

Ithaca

For a walk-in evening — pick from the Commons dining, no reservation needed at most spots on a weekday. Coltivare, Just A Taste, Le Café Cent-Dix — the density is the point.

Kindred Fare

Book ahead · Geneva

Geneva

Not in Ithaca — Geneva, forty-five minutes north. The chef-driven dinner at the north end of Seneca. If the group wants one properly serious meal on the trip, this is it. Book by Wednesday.

8:30-9 PM · THE DRIVE HOME

Back to the dock.

Thirty-five minutes home to the property. Sunset is behind you, the lake is opening back up, and the dock is quiet for the last drink of the day.

Clute Memorial Park

Optional stop

Watkins Glen

The Watkins Glen alternative if you want one more stop before home. Splash pad, lakefront path, five-minute detour off the drive. Kids get one more run before bed.

The Practical

How to run the day.

  • MARKET IS SAT-SUN

The Ithaca Farmers Market runs Saturday and Sunday in season. Any other day, swap in a gorge — Buttermilk or Robert Treman are both twelve minutes from the Commons.

  • PARK UNDERGROUND

The Green Street garage under the Commons is the reliable park. Cheap, weather-proof, thirty seconds from the pedestrian plaza.

  • SATURDAY MARKETS ARRIVE EARLY

The Ithaca Farmers Market opens 9 AM Saturday; parking at Steamboat Landing fills by 10. If you're there by 9 you park at the market; after that you park downtown and walk.

  • GORGE FROM DOWNTOWN

Buttermilk and Robert Treman are both 10-12 minutes from the Commons. Do the gorge morning; do the Commons afternoon; do Purity for the treat.

  • DINNER RESERVATIONS

Kindred Fare and Coltivare book out mid-week. Call Monday or Tuesday for a Friday or Saturday table.

THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES AWAY

The Ithaca day is worth the drive.

Both properties are thirty-five minutes from the Commons. The market day is a full-day trip; plan the drive home for after dinner.
